Nokia Siemens Networks Unites Communities at CommunicAsia 2007
Nokia Siemens Networks today demonstrated the scope of its communications technologies at CommunicAsia 2007, part of its broader push to work closely with customers and help connect 5 billion people globally by 2015.
A key highlight of the event is an innovative solution called Nokia Siemens Networks Village Connection, which helps build rural connectivity village-by-village. It enables operators to extend their reach to remote villages, where a traditional technology and business model would not achieve profitable business. Nokia Siemens Networks Village Connection solution enables franchise-based business model between an operator and local village entrepreneurs.
“An estimated two billion people live in approximately two million villages in emerging markets globally. While many villagers are in need of basic telephony – to call doctors for instance – the majority do not have access to these services,” said Rajeev Suri, head of Asia-Pacific Region, Nokia Siemens Networks. ”While providing mobile connections can be a viable option for governments or operators in these communities, there is also a cost challenge as consumers can only spend two to three US dollars a month on communications. Through our Village Connection solution we hope to make mobile connections available to these markets at an affordable cost for operators and consumers.”
Nokia Siemens Networks is also showcasing its Long Term Evolution (LTE) at CommunicAsia 2007. LTE is the result of ongoing work by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), a collaborative group of international standards organizations and mobile-technology companies.
As device evolution brings the mobile Internet experience to the consumer mass market, Internet usage is expected to change from simple browsing to the ubiquitous Web2.0. Video content, for example, will be accessible anytime and anywhere, and flat-rate pricing will bolster consumers’ to use these services. As a result, the total data traffic in mobile networks will rise remarkably.
To offer these new services efficiently, a continuous development of cellular networks, cost savings and enhanced user experience by simplified network architecture, like I-HSPA and LTE, are required. Nokia Siemens Networks innovation I-HSPA introduces a flat network architecture to WCDMA/HSPA, enabling cost-efficient scaling of the network with rapidly growing data traffic volumes.
Nokia Siemens Networks I-HSPA solution will be demonstrated in CommunicAsia 2007. I-HSPA is the first step towards LTE, Long Term Evolution of 3G networks. Visitors to Nokia Siemens Networks’ LTE demonstration will be showing delivery of new multimedia and rich call applications with full mobility and high data speeds.
Another compelling product is Nokia Siemens Networks Unified Attachment Node (UAN), which simplifies secure authentication for mobile networks. The UAN allows operators to use SIM authentication for different access technologies and services: one SIM card, one login fits all. The “one-click-access” to third-party services from, for example, the Internet, will be shown at the booth.
Nokia Siemens Networks will provide in-depth showcases of today’s most compelling solutions for increasing personal enjoyment and productivity. Visitors will see a wide variety of music and video services, including:
• Mobile TV, using both broadcast (DVB-H) and unicast media-on-demand technologies to deliver TV programming to mobile devices.
• IPTV enhances consumer choice, convenience and control with advanced digital entertainment services, and includes new features such as e-commerce, access to user-generated content and a voting and betting application via remote control.
• The Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS), which shows a more efficient future for services such as podcasting and TV streaming using cellular access and mobile devices.
• A music solution providing a piracy-proof online boutique for music downloading, streaming and ring-back tones, available regardless of access method used.
Other demos include Rich Communication, which combines sophisticated multimedia communication with “presence” and “availability” information to boost revenue growth and customer loyalty for service providers.
Nokia Siemens Networks is also presenting state-of-the-art, access solutions for the transmission of data-hungry triple play applications combining high-speed Internet, Voice over IP (VoIP) and video services: FTTC (fiber to the curb) provides bandwidths of around 50 megabits a second (Mbit/s); FTTB (fiber to the building) and FTTH (fiber to the home) permit a bandwidth to more than 100 Mbit/s. All FTTx architectures can be implemented using different technologies, DSL (VDSL2), passive optical networks (PON) or pure Ethernet solutions and allow OPEX to be kept to a minimum, demonstrating the technical leadership of Nokia Siemens Networks.
In the Operations and Business Support Systems field, the company demonstrates online charging, inventory and customer care solutions that help service providers to improve the end-user service experience. Nokia Siemens Networks is also illustrating the role of developer programs in stimulating the growth of this market.
Nokia Siemens Networks is located in Hall 5, booth 5B3-01, at CommunicAsia 2007.
