AMD, Spansion Host U.S. Department of Education Math and Science Event for Teachers

AMD (NYSE: AMD) and Spansion (NASDAQ: SPSN) are co-hosting one of 22 U.S. Department of Education (DOE) summer workshop series events today and tomorrow at the Spansion facility in Austin, Texas. This year marks the fourth annual DOE best practices summer workshop series in which kindergarten through twelfth-grade teachers across the country have the opportunity to learn new strategies from other educators who have been highly successful in raising student achievement.

The workshops are part of the DOE Teacher-to-Teacher Initiative, which supports teachers in a variety of ways, including training seminars and sharing the latest research and strategies for helping students succeed in learning. The AMD/Spansion event focuses specifically on the latest and most effective math and science teaching techniques.

“AMD has deep roots in our local communities, including a long history of supporting teacher development. We recognize that one classroom teacher armed with the best tools and techniques can inspire hundreds of children to learn,” said AMD Global Community Affairs Director Allyson Peerman. “As an engineering company, our livelihood depends on the ability to continually hire the next generation of engineers and technical workers. So the focus of this workshop on math and science is a natural fit for AMD.”

More than 100 teachers are registered for the math and science workshop in Austin, with the majority coming from school districts within the Central Texas region; however, a number of teachers are traveling from out of state to attend the event.

“While Spansion supports a number of good causes in our community, few will have the long-lasting impact of the investments we make in education,” said Spansion Community Affairs Program Manager Ann Stafford. “The Teacher-to-Teacher workshops offer the opportunity for educators to share best practices, explore new innovations in teaching methods and energize their classrooms.”
