Alcatel-Lucent successfully completes a secure wireless deployment at a University of Cambridge College

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that the deployment of a secure and centrally managed Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) for the Homerton College, UK, part of the University of Cambridge, has been completed. The WLAN was deployed to improve internal communications and give students, staff and conference delegates a more flexible working environment.

The installation was carried out by Alcatel-Lucent’s business partner Khipu Networks, and is based on Alcatel-Lucent’s OmniAccess Wireless LAN (WLAN) technology, integrated with Bradford Networks’ network access control solution ‘Bradford Campus Manager’. The new solution ensures the network is fully secured from unauthorised devices and enables Homerton College users to access the College network and the public internet from anywhere on campus, including the library, dining hall, teaching rooms, campus lawns and even the bar. The College anticipates that the new network will encourage stronger dialogue and collaboration between staff and students.

The solution allows the College to use the network as a competitive differentiator, attracting students requiring state-of-the-art technology in their everyday interactions. It also provides secure wireless access to the College network in all of the residence halls, where previously fixed access points had been needed in every room. The WLAN also attracts greater revenue opportunities for the College, as conference delegates, who use the network and campus facilities during vacation periods, are now able to use personal portable devices across the campus.

“The Alcatel-Lucent and Bradford Networks integrated solution provides our students and staff with high-speed, easy and secure access to university resources from a range of mobile devices, wherever they are on the campus,” said Tristan Warbey, computer officer at Homerton College. “By automatically identifying and authenticating users as they connect, the solution also keeps the network secure – a key issue with wireless networks.”
