The Indian Institute of Science Alumni Association of North America (IISc AANA) announced today that two of its core members will be leading a workshop on Drug Discovery and Design at Indian Institute of Science. One of the initiatives of Indian Institute of Science Alumni Association of North America (IISc AANA) is to share the knowledge and expertise of the alumni with the faculty and students of Indian Institute of Science and throughout India, and eventually formalize strategic alliances between IISc alumni and IISc/Indian biotech companies to address some of the India’s healthcare needs, especially in the area of infectious diseases such as AIDS, Malaria, Dengue fever, etc. The objective of these activities is to further Indo-US collaboration in high value added research activities.
To this end, Dr. Surya Sankuratri and Dr. Chakk Ramesha of Roche Pharmaceuticals, two recognized scientists in drug discovery and core members of the IISc AANA, are leading a week-long workshop entitled “Introduction to Drug Discovery and Drug Design”. This workshop is an educational forum that endeavors to provide comprehensive review of the drug discovery process against a backdrop of the technology and research revolution, and includes a horizontal overview of the disciplines involved in the drug discovery process and a vertical delve into the critical elements of each discipline. As Indian industry is transforming itself from generic drug maker to a research driven business model, this workshop will familiarize the participants with the current practices in major pharmaceutical companies. With a large pool of scientific talent, India is expected to make a major impact to the world’s drug discovery efforts.
The workshop is scheduled for July 30th – August 3, 2007; hosted by Indian Institute of Science with over 100 participants from various research institutions and biotech/pharma companies in India. Additional info on the workshop is available on IISc web site at http://www.serc.iisc.ernet.in/~ddw07/theme.html
