Nirvanix Revolutionizes Internet Storage for Media & Web Applications with Launch of Storage Delivery Service
Service Dramatically Reduces Time-to-Market and Costs for Integrating On-Line Storage into Media & Web Applications
Emerging from stealth mode today, San Diego-based startup Nirvanix is unveiling its new business-to-business storage delivery service (SDS) that offers on-demand Internet storage for Web 2.0, media application, service provider and consumer electronics companies. Built on the company’s patent-pending Internet Media File System™, the Nirvanix SDS enables rapid integration of online media storage and sharing into applications via web services.
According to IDC, the digital universe will expand 600% to 988 exabytes by 2010 at a compound annual growth rate of 57%. Nearly 70% of this data will be user-generated content and 50% of this data will be on-line, marking a dramatic shift in how consumers use the Web and how businesses must support this explosive data growth.
“The shift from a desktop-centric application world to an Internet-centric world dictates the creation of a new, massively scalable storage platform,” said Patrick Harr, CEO of Nirvanix, “Nirvanix is this platform. Our proprietary media clustered file system, available through the storage delivery service, scales to support the exabytes of media content that will be created, shared and hosted online by hundreds of millions of users over the next decade.”
“Storage 2.0 is going to be the absolute lynchpin for infrastructure in the new world order,” according to Steve Duplessie, founder and senior analyst of Enterprise Strategy Group. “Being able to adapt instantly to unknown scale demands without worrying about the operating issues or the costs is exactly what will enable the revolution. Nirvanix is in exactly the right place at exactly the right time.”
Offered as storage-as-a-service (SaaS), the Nirvanix SDS enables any Internet-enabled application to scale instantly and meet the demands of delivering millions of media files such as video, audio, photographs and documents. It also eliminates the expense, headaches, and time-to-market issues associated with purchasing and maintaining expensive legacy storage hardware.
The Nirvanix Internet Media File System, the backbone of the Nirvanix SDS, was designed from the ground-up to eliminate scaling considerations when building new web services. It removes barriers for companies to offer Internet-scale media applications by eliminating all storage and bandwidth constraints from the application servers and into Nirvanix’s SDS that scales to one pentillion files (a pentillion is 1 followed by 18 zeros). A pentillion files would be equal to 150 million files for every man, woman and child on the planet.
Nirvanix Storage Delivery Service (SDS)
The Nirvanix SDS, available through a rich Web Services API provides developers with quick time-to-market, global reach, and unique server-side media processing functionality to create compelling applications and services. The Nirvanix SDS is:
Easy to Integrate
The first true multi-tenant file system for the Internet: Unlike competing services, the IMFS includes full file system calls to move, copy, rename, delete, upload, and download files and folders in each account via REST and SOAP web services.
Simplified applications with server-side media processing: Unique media processing calls allow image resize/rotate and soon video/audio transcoding.
Reduced complexity with HTTP upload: HTTP upload enables web-based applications to upload content directly to a Nirvanix account without having to proxy through a website that doubles bandwidth cost.
Quick time to market with turnkey reference applications: Nirvanix provides reference code in popular programming languages for accelerated integration, including file managers, Windows-compatible backup, and an FTP proxy.
Easy to Scale
Instantly-scalable clustered file system architecture: Supports online applications that handle millions of users and billions of files online with a single namespace.
Best user experience with dynamic load-balancing: Sudden traffic peaks do not affect the end-user experience for files stored in the Nirvanix Media File System.
Easy to Control
Control usage and expenses with limit enforcement: Patent-pending subaccount capabilities include the ability to create end-user accounts with customizable usage limits that are automatically enforced.
Best-in-class availability and support: Guaranteed service-level agreement (SLA) comes with RAID-6 data protection, real-time monitoring, and 24/7 email, chat and phone access.
Instant insight into service status: Account features, utilization and costs are managed through the Nirvanix Management Portal (NMP) 24 hours a day.
Simple Business Model: Pay-as-you-go model only includes storage and bandwidth used.
Target Market
Nirvanix levels the playing field by significantly lowering the barriers to entry faced by application developers – namely the expense and expertise required to build and Internet-scale storage backend to host and serve their own files. Target applications include social networking sites, online video applications, photo sharing and widgets, progressive HTTP streaming, digital media locker, and backup and recovery applications. Application providers and ISVs can focus on their core competencies and in innovating for their customers, instead of managing and developing expertise in storage.
Service Availability and Pricing
The Nirvanix Storage Delivery Service is in public beta and will be generally available this month. The service is priced at $0.18 per gigabyte per month of storage and $.18 per gigabyte transferred. Pricing includes basic support and a guaranteed SLA of 99.9% uptime and availability. Additional customer support options are available at $160 per month for enhanced level, and $600 per month for premium. Media processing services will be priced as they become generally available.
