VIA PadLock launched to Strengthen and Accelerates Security for Javaâ„¢
New Delhi November 11, 2005 – Chip firm VIA Technologies today released the VIA Java™ Cryptography Service Provider (VIA JCP), an add-on package that enables the Java Runtime Environment used in many common online and desktop applications to offload AES encryption and random number generation to the VIA PadLock Security Engine integrated into all VIA C7-M and VIA C7 processors.
Security of information exchanged and stored on notebooks and PCs has become a forefront issue in computing. Hackers intercept online banking, e-trading, peer-to-peer file transfer, VOD, VoIP and even email data transmitted across the Internet and stored locally to steal valuable personal and company identity information.
The VIA JCP helps fight this threat by enabling Java-based applications that utilize the Java Cryptography Architecture to benefit from the military-grade protection offered by the VIA PadLock Security Engine with no program modification. Running in the background of Microsoft® Windows® and Linux operating systems, the VIA JCP requires no user interaction or maintenance.
Drawing on the power and strength of VIA PadLock’s hardware cryptography, the VIA JCP can accelerate these AES cipher functions by up to 90 times, enabling real-time encryption of data with low processor utilization, and strengthens the process of private/public key creation through utilizing the unprecedented speed and quality of VIA PadLock’s quantum based random number generators to build an unshakable foundation for security.
“Java plays a pivotal role in enabling rich, dynamic and secure Internet-based applications, so we believe it is essential to be proactive in developing technologies that enhance the security of our processor platforms,†said Richard Brown, Vice President of Corporate Marketing, VIA Technologies, Inc. “Enabling the power of VIA PadLock through the VIA implementation of the Java Cryptography Service Provider is another major step towards driving pervasive computer security through making everyday applications safer and faster.â€
About the VIA JCP
VIA’s implementation of the Java Cryptography Service Provider (VIA JCP) is a background application that offloads some of the computational process involved in the Java Cryptography Architecture’s AES based cipher and secure random number generator methods to the VIA PadLock Security Engine included within all VIA C7-M and VIA C7 processors. website at http://community.java.net/embeddedjava/
