AT&T South Carolina Presents 19th Annual African-American History Calendar

AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) has announced the unveiling of the 19th annual South Carolina African-American History Calendar today. It is designed for students to learn more about the contributions of distinguished African-Americans, and the 2008 calendar features stories about African-Americans who were born in South Carolina or have a significant connection to the state. More than 230 people have been featured in the calendar since the project was launched in 1989.

“A whole generation of South Carolina students has grown up learning about the contributions that African-Americans have made to our state,” said Martha Smith, public affairs director, AT&T South Carolina. “These individuals sometimes don’t make it into a classroom textbook, though their contributions are just as important for our students to be aware of as the contributions that began here at home.”

The 2007 – 2008 calendar features individuals from the areas of broadcasting, civil rights, education, health care, the performing arts and entertainment, photography, politics, and law. The calendar is available at http://www.scafricanamerican.com/media, along with additional information on past honorees.

“South Carolina has a rich and varied cultural tapestry, and each year AT&T’s African-American History Calendar illustrates that tapestry in remarkable ways,” said Jim Rex, state superintendent of education. “On top of that, the calendar does a wonderful job of highlighting positive role models for our kids.”
