World renowned scientists speak at the GVK BIO Symposium

Prof. K.C.Nicolaou, Scripps Research Institute is the keynote speaker

Hyderabad, India, October 05, 2007 – GVK Biosciences and Wyeth Pharma organized an international symposium on the 05th of October 2007 on “New Dimensions in Organic Synthesis” at the Hyderabad International Convention Center. World renowned leaders in Chemistry presented on various topics including crystal engineering, chemical tools for the study of complex biological systems, approaches to novel chemical reactions, synergy between natural products & drug discovery and total synthesis efforts. The Symposium was inaugurated by Mr. Frank Walsh, Executive Vice President, Wyeth Pharma

Mr. G V Sanjay Reddy, Managing Director, GVK BIO in his opening remarks said “this is a first of its kind Symposium being organized in Hyderabad in the area of Organic Chemistry and specifically organic synthesis. GVK BIO has taken a lead in advancing the science agenda in India by bringing together world-renowned scientists and enabling knowledge sharing”. Mr. Reddy also announced the institutionalization of The GVK BIO Research Award for the best research project by a research scholar in the area of Drug Discovery. He further added that GVK BIO plans to host similar events in the future.

A galaxy of distinguished speakers addressed delegates from various fields including corporate, research and academia. Prof K.C.Nicolaou was the keynote speaker at the Symposium. K.C. Nicolaou’s research interests focus on chemical synthesis and chemical biology. He is the author or co-author of over 640 publications, over 60 patents, and 4 books. His dedication to chemical education is evidenced by his training of more than 350 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

The other speakers, whose presentations were around Organic Synthesis included, Prof. Gautam R. Desiraju, University of Hyderabad; Prof. Barbara Imperiali, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Dr. Vijay Nair, RRL Trivandrum; Prof. John Porco, Boston University and Prof. Goverdhan Mehta, IISC. The presentations and sessions were very well received by the auditorium filled with more than 1000 corporate professionals, scientists, research scholars and students.
