Xerox and Partners Set Sail to Support Multi-Cultural Learning and Sustainability on Maiden Voyage of The Scholar Ship

Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) announced its partnership with The Scholar Ship, a new program that takes a college environment out to sea on an ocean liner packed with students ready to take on the world – literally – port-by-port. The inaugural voyage is currently hosting students from 35 countries, and faculty and staff from 16 nationalities.

This oceangoing campus aligns with Xerox’s longstanding commitment to education, diversity and innovation. For 40 years, the company has supported education through programs like its unique Science Consultant Program as well as scholarships and research grants provided to minority students and universities around the world.

As a recognized leader for promoting diversity in the workplace, Xerox sees The Scholar Ship as a way to promote better cultural understanding and tolerance. “By visiting places from Latin America to Asia, The Scholar Ship gives its students an unparalleled appreciation for diverse cultures and geographies,” said Phil Harlow, chief diversity officer at Xerox. “These are values aligned with our goals for a diverse global workforce.”

Xerox is participating in The Scholar Ship’s Guest Lecturer Series and is part of The Scholar Ship’s Intercultural Leadership Forum. The group provides input on The Scholar Ship’s curriculum to maintain a cutting-edge learning environment.

“Our program develops the intercultural skills essential to success in the global workforce. Partnering with companies like brand and industry leaders like Xerox gives our students insight into how business is conducted on a global stage,” said Ron Zighelboim, chief marketing officer of The Scholar Ship.

Xerox will also provide its multifunction printing systems to serve the staff, students, and crew aboard the oceangoing campus on its maiden voyage, which departed Piraeus, Athens, last month. And, Xerox is leading the onboard recycling efforts for the program, encouraging more reuse and less waste.

The Scholar Ship is a 29,000-ton ocean liner that can accommodate up to 600 undergraduate and graduate students in a multicultural academic and living environment as they cross the globe.

The Scholar Ship receives financial and operational support from Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. Seven international universities have collaborated on the development of The Scholar Ship’s onboard and in-port programs. The consortium of academic stewards includes the University of California, Berkeley (United States), Macquarie University (Australia), Fudan University (China), Tecnologico de Monterrey (Mexico), Al Akhawayn University (Morocco), University of Ghana (Sub-Saharan Africa), and Cardiff University (United Kingdom).
