HP Announces China Research Lab

HP today announced it has established a research laboratory in China where it will collaborate with both the public and private sectors to develop future information management systems. “HP has been in China for 20 years,” said Dick Lampman, senior vice president of research, HP, and director, HP Labs. “This addition to HP Labs builds on long-established relationships and will strengthen the partnership between HP and China’s premier research universities and extensive research community. It also strengthens HP’s collaboration with the China Ministry of Education to grow China’s university research infrastructure.”

HP Labs is the company’s central research organization. In addition to the new China lab, there are five other facilities – the headquarters lab in Palo Alto, Calif., and sites in Bangalore, India; Bristol, U.K.; Haifa, Israel, and Tokyo, Japan. “The potential scale of the Chinese economy, with its vast population and geographic reach, presents exciting opportunities for innovations in information technology for both the public sector and enterprises,” said Meichun Hsu, director, HP Labs China. “We’re excited about establishing a technical research group in this dynamic, rapidly growing environment.” Hsu recently joined HP Labs from Commerce One, where she was senior vice president of engineering. Before entering the private sector, she was a faculty member at Harvard University, where she conducted research in information management systems.
