Samsung to manufacture mobile phones in Gurgaon, Haryana

Samsung is setting up a handset manufacturing facility in Gurgaon, Haryana, which is the company’s fourth manufacturing facility in the world. Samsung has announced its plans to set up a Mobile Handset Manufacturing Facility at Manesar in Gurgaon. The Gurgaon facility will be Samsung’s fourth overseas handset manufacturing facility in the world after China, Brazil and Mexico.

To be set up with an investment of US$ 15 Million, this facility will have an initial plant capacity of one Million units per annum, which will be stepped up to 20 Million units per annum by the Year 2010. The plant will also cater to South-West Asia market in addition to Indian customers. “We plan to make this Mobile Facility as the Manufacturing Hub for South West Asia,” stated H. C. Ryu, director-Telecom, Samsung India.

The mass production at this facility will commence by the end of the first quarter in 2006. Ryu Said, “It will help us respond faster to the market and the needs of Indian customers, go in for greater product customisation and be in a position to fully tap the potential of this fast growing, Indian mobile market”.

The Company plans to manufacture a few GSM Handsets models from its 2006 line up at the Manesar facility, while the balance will continue to be imported. The Company will also customise these models with the help of Samsung India Software Operations unit (SISO), Samsung’s R&D centre located at Bangalore.

The initial Capital that is being brought in by Samsung for this facility is $10 million. In the first Year, this highly advanced, automated facility will employ approximately 200 people.
Speaking on Samsung’s business plans for the coming Year, Ryu states, “We plan to continue with our thrust on the colour/camera segment in the Indian market. We will leverage our global leadership in design, display and camera, to introduce innovative, leading technology products in the Indian market. Around 90 per cent of Samsung handset sales this Year will come from the colour and camera phone segment.”

Samsung has also launched three new handsets in the Indian market. However, the company did not reveal whether these new handsets will be one of those manufactured in the new facility.
