New Heat Sinks Cool Cavium Network’s OCTEON™ Processors

Advanced Thermal Solutions, Inc. (ATS) has introduced two new heat sink solutions specially designed for cooling Cavium Networks’ widely-used OCTEON Plus CN56XX and OCTEON CN38XX and CN36XX multi-core MIPS64 processors. Ideal for use in telecommunications and embedded computing environments, the new ATS-691 and ATS-725 heat sinks maintain component case temperatures (Tcase) at or below the manufacturer’s thermal specifications and help maintain long-term device reliability.

The new ATS-691 active heat sink includes an integrated blower fan for use in environments with little or no air flow. It is made from copper and features rows of thin, precisely skived fins for enhanced flow of forced air. The thermal resistance of the ATS-691 heat sink is just 0.60°C/W in an air flow of 200 ft/min (1 m/s). The integral fan delivers air flow up to 3.88 CFM. Each ATS-691 heat sink measures 90 mm x 76 mm and is just 11 mm high and comes with pre-attached phase changing thermal interface material (TIM). Screw mounting hardware is also included, with custom attachment options available.

The new ATS-725 passive heat sink provides high levels of cooling performance in local air flow without a fan. It is made from light-weight, extruded aluminum with an anodized finish and features ATS’ maxiFLOW™ flared fin architecture to maximize cooling surfaces. The ATS-725 measures 40 mm x 40 mm at its base, is just 20 mm high and has a thermal resistance of only 2.0°C/W in an air velocity of 200 ft/min (1 m/s). It is mounted with a pair of spring-loaded, push pin mounts for opposite corner attachment directly to the PCB, providing mechanical stability for shock and vibration and includes pre-attached phase changing TIM.

Both heat sinks are RoHS compliant. Pricing for ATS-691 heat sinks, with mounting screws and phase changing TIM, start at less than $24.00 in volume orders. The ATS-725 heat sink, including push pin hardware and a pre-assembled TIM, is priced at $6.00 in production quantities.
