The first citizen journalist news portal, www.merinews.com, has brought out an impressive collector’s item, Glimpses 2007. A democratic portal, merinews.com has a large database of user-generated content. The all-colour, 160-page Glimpses give the readers a feel of a large cross-section of citizen journalists’ viewpoints reflected over the year of 2007.
It’s rather interesting to note a different perspective from an alternative media like merinews.com. Its Editor-in-Chief, Vipul Kant Upadhyay, stated, “ Breaking free the shackles of traditional newsroom management, the news portal is a democratic platform, wherein any citizen – both national and global – may share their news, views and other perceptions about what should be reported. Also known as participatory journalism or grassroots journalism, the articles featured on our site promote freedom of expression, which is one of the Fundamental Rights granted by the Indian Constitution.”
The editorial team of the news portal handpicked and collated select articles, comments and news items that were uploaded on the site, between January and December 2007.
“It is the first time in the world that an online citizen journalist news portal has brought out a print version of select articles,” stated Anshuman Misra, director operations.
The online version of Glimpses 2007 is just a click away. One needs to log on the site, www.merinews.com and click on the right hand side of the landing page, which says, ‘Glimpses 2007 … Online now’. It’s a large sky blue box, with sunshine yellow and black lettering.
For those who may not get the rare print version of Glimpses 2007, the online edition would give them a fair idea of what merinews.com represents or means by ‘democratic content’.
