The Forecast of the Web Appears to be Partly Cloudy

COLUMBIA, MISSOURI – As the web grows in size and the technology driving it continues to improve, a simple new technology is emerging that could start a trend on the way images are shown online. Created by an engineering student at the University of Missouri-Columbia, picture clouds are 360° images that anyone with a digital camera can make in just minutes. People upload images taken around an object, and picturecloud.com automatically converts the files into a free picture cloud to be posted in a web page, auction, and blog.

“As a college student, I spent a lot of time window shopping on the internet and realized that 360° images could really help people in their online buying decisions, but knew that the only way to get people to adapt to this type of technology is to make it very quick and simple. Since then, picture clouds have been used to display houses, cars, toys, people, pets, and anything else you can think of. There are so many uses for picture clouds, I’m excited to see how people will use the site. This type of technology works well for selling cars or tracking weigh loss!” explains Paul Pattison, the 22 year old founder of Picture Cloud LLC.

With the rapid growth of both broadband internet access and digital camera usage, technologies like these are expected to continue to emerge as increasingly more and more consumers shop online. Many analysts think the web is still in its adolescence and we are seeing a shift in the quality and quantity of content delivered as dialup connections continue to get washed out. However, as innovations on the internet continue to emerge from the younger members of ‘generation @’ like Pattison, no one can predict what we will see on the internet in the future.
