Alcatel-Lucent and LG Electronics form strategic alliance and expand collaboration on Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband technology

At the Mobile World Congress tradeshow and exhibition, Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris & NYSE: ALU) and LG Electronics (LGE) today announced that the two companies have formed a strategic alliance and expanded their collaboration on the development, testing and commercialization of Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband technology. As part of a collaboration agreement, the two companies are cooperating on LTE research and development and interoperability testing efforts, harmonizing their contributions to the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards development effort and teaming to support ongoing customer trials.

To highlight their joint progress in bringing LTE to market, at the show the two companies are demonstrating very high-speed, very high-bandwidth transmissions — using Alcatel-Lucent infrastructure and LGE mobile device prototypes – supporting dozens of DVD-quality and high-definition video streams simultaneously in the same radio cell. The demonstrations will feature the delivery of video over LTE between the Alcatel-Lucent and LGE stands at the show.

These demonstrations highlight the rapid progress the companies are making in this joint initiative, expanding upon their accomplishment last year of one of the industry’s first multi-vendor, live LTE calls. Today, the two companies are demonstrating 2×2 multiple input/multiple output (MIMO) technology, delivering throughput of approximately 180 megabits per second (Mbps) in total, showing the truly broadband capabilities of LTE. This accomplishment demonstrates the early progress the two companies are making in the delivery of stable and open LTE solutions.

“Today we are showing once again the rapid strides that Alcatel-Lucent and LGE are making in bringing LTE to market,” said Paul Larbey, VP of LTE Product Management at Alcatel-Lucent. “This technology is coming together very quickly, and together our two companies are helping ensure that by the end of the decade we will see commercial systems in operation, supported by a large and robust ecosystem of applications, customer devices and infrastructure.”
