Industry visionary to outline future of optical networking in Europe

Len Bosack, co-founder of Cisco and CEO of optical transport system manufacturer XKL, will give the keynote presentation at the Market Focus seminars of the 2008 European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communications (ECOC), taking place in Brussels, 21-25 September.

Bosack is considered one of the pioneers of network technologies and is one of the engineers credited with the development of the router, a key component in the internet network. The keynote presentation will take place on Tuesday 23rd September, and open the Market Focus sessions, which last year featured representatives from BT, Ericsson, Bookham and JDSU.

“There’s a huge amount of fiber development activity spread across Europe, and a lot of the world just doesn’t get that they’re doing it, or just how active the fiber development community really is,” says Bosack. “Amsterdam, London, Paris, Stockholm and other cities are riddled with fiber and the cost of lighting it has just been too high. New technology can now make it more affordable, and I’m looking forward to discussing the development and pitfalls of topics like 100Gb/s transmission at ECOC 2008.”

Last year’s ECOC attracted nearly 6,000 visitors – an increase of 20% on 2006 – and sold out for the first time since the market crash. With today’s announcement of the first high profile keynote speaker for this year, the stage is set for ECOC 2008 to surpass last year’s achievement.
