Cutting-Edge University Continues to Invest in NEC Technology to Unify Its Business Communications with UNIVERGE®360
NEC Unified Solutions, Inc., a global leader in enterprise business communications, today announced that the University of New Mexico (UNM) is installing the UC for Enterprise suite of advanced unified communications (UC) applications and NEC’s revolutionary modular IP terminals in a strategic deployment that includes the university’s top administrators and department heads.
“Our goal in deploying IP and application-based communications is not only long-term investment protection, but also building on our NEC infrastructure to make communications on campus more intuitive and convenient through cutting-edge productivity applications, such as NEC’s UC for Enterprise,” said Mark Reynolds, Associate Director for ITS Communications Network Services (CNS) at UNM. “With the assistance and expertise of NEC, this deployment is helping us understand how UC can improve business communications, work efficiency and information availability among executive users at our university.”
UC for Enterprise applications that the university is deploying include:
UNIVERGE® UC700 desktop client with enhanced presence-based call routing, click-to-call and clipboard dialing from any desktop application, standards-based instant messaging, communication history information, unified message center, voice, video and Web conferencing with screen sharing capabilities;
UNIVERGE MC530 mobile client, which extends UC features and functionality onto a true dual-mode Wi-Fi and cellular mobile device with seamless handoff from the wireless network to the cellular network.
UNIVERGE DT300 and DT700 series IP terminals featuring a modular design, SIP compatibility, LCD touch screens and XML support to allow for customized content development.
The UNIVERGE MA4000 management console already in use enables centralized management of both new and existing deployments. The University is currently using MA4000 to simplify new installations, proactively address moves, adds and changes on campus, and make scheduled IT-administered changes to the network. Ultimately, the administration package will allow end users to control their phone settings from their Web browsers.
“In a few short years, UNM has moved from pure digital telephony to a mixed IP communications environment and is now deploying UC applications that can truly help improve communications flexibility on campus over the long term,” said Don Fiorentino, vice president and general manager of western regional sales for NEC Unified Solutions. ”By giving employees single-number access, presence-based call routing and calendar integration, the University and NEC are enabling them to more efficiently manage their own communications and busy work schedules.”
For the deployment, NEC’s UC for Enterprise suite has been installed in conjunction with a new UNIVERGE® SV7000 IP communications server connected to the university’s two existing UNIVERGE NEAX® 2400 IPXs via NEC’s FUSION Call Control Signaling (FCCS) solution. This simple upgrade enables all of the university’s IP-PBXs to function as one.
In 2006, the university began implementing its customized NEC IP communications solution supporting 22,000 voice terminals (IP, TDM and analog) ports on-campus connecting administration, faculty and students, as well as the University of New Mexico Hospital campus and Health Science Center. This hospital is home to the state’s only Level 1 trauma center and is the primary teaching hospital for the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. UNM is planning, as funds become available, to develop, install and provide a robust, IP-enabled campus environment.
