Wipro plans on expanding Chennai operations

IT major to add 35000 seats in the city

Chennai, India, 31st March 08 – Wipro Technologies, the global IT services business of Wipro Limited (NYSE:WIT) today announced that it was expanding its Chennai operations. Wipro is setting up an 80 acre new facility in Sholinganallur-ELCOT Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and it has additionally invested in a 90 acre facility in Mahindra city SEZ in the city to augment the business growth expected in the next 5 years.

Sudip Banerjee, President, Enterprise Solutions, Wipro Technologies said, “In order to sustain our growth, we need to expand our presence in the key IT hubs in the country. Chennai continues to be very conducive for our needs as the city has a rich talent pool and continues to attract talent from neighboring states. We have been present in Chennai for about 8 years and have already spread to multiple locations in the city.”

The Sholinganallur-ELCOT Special Economic Zone (SEZ) which is being set up to accommodate 35000 seats is already operational and currently seats around 2500 employees. Including this facility the IT major now has 6 offices in the city.

The current Wipro Chennai operations services customers encompassing diverse industries such as Telecom, Banking Enterprise, manufacturing, retail, travel , media, technology and transportation. Apart from having Centres of Excellence (COE) teams in broadband, retail, banking, wireless, consumer electronics and a Japanese competency lab, the development center also has a global command center set up to support multiple customers through a unified service desk.
