GameTrailers (GT), the premier provider of video for gamers and a division of Viacom Inc.’s (NYSE: VIA, VIA.B) MTV Networks Entertainment Group, announced today that Nintendo of America’s Super Smash Bros.® Brawl has achieved 10 million or more video views on GameTrailers.com, according to GameTrailers’ video tracking tool Stream Stats. Super Smash Bros. Brawl is only the fifth title to receive the esteemed GameTrailers Diamond Award. A formidable milestone met by very few games, 10 million video views reinforces the extreme popularity of the game among GT’s loyal, hardcore gamer audience.
“Super Smash Bros. Brawl was one of the most anticipated games of 2008, and it’s no surprise that it has achieved more than 10 million video views in record breaking time,” said Shane Satterfield, editor in chief, GameTrailers. “The GameTrailers Diamond Award pays tribute to Nintendo for making an outstanding game that is an undisputed favorite among the GT audience.”
Super Smash Bros. Brawl is an action-packed fighting game where characters from across all the Nintendo universes brawl until only one is left standing. It features dozens of Nintendo characters, from Mario™ to Link™ to Pikachu®, as well as new characters like Solid Snake from Konami’s Metal Gear series, and Sega’s Sonic The Hedgehog. The game, which features online play and nearly limitless possibilities for players, has become the fastest-selling video game in Nintendo of America’s history, selling more than 1.4 million units in the United States within its first week of launch, March 9-16.
“Super Smash Bros. Brawl has transcended what many thought was possible in gaming,” said Denise Kaigler, Nintendo of America’s vice president of corporate affairs. “Our hardcore fan base has been rewarded with a venerable who’s who of video game history and we’re thrilled these fans have responded so positively to it.”
The first four honorees of the prestigious GameTrailers Diamond Award were Activision and Infinity Ward for Call of Duty 4®: Modern Warfare™, Ubisoft and Ubisoft Montreal for Assassin’s Creed®, Konami and Kojima Productions for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots® and Electronic Arts and Crytek for Crysis®.
The figures for the GameTrailers Diamond Award were compiled by Stream Stats, a proprietary tool that gives gaming industry professionals insight into which games the GT audience is interacting with the most in order to anticipate upcoming sales and analyze post release performance.
