ShredAfterTaxDay.com Allows ShredStation Customers to Choose Discount, Provides Educational Resource for Document Destruction and ID Theft Prevention

ShredStation, a leader in consumer and small business document and e-media destruction today launched its national “Shred After Tax Day” campaign. The corresponding website, www.shredaftertaxday.com, allows consumers to choose the discount amount that matches their income tax bracket from April 15th to April 30th. The discount amounts reflect the different tax bracket levels of 10, 15, 25, 28, 33 and 35 percent.

Outside of the promotional offering, the website offers educational information about document destruction and ID theft prevention. It features the recommended lengths of time for which people should save a variety of financial and personal documents before shredding them. Additionally, the site offers a survey that visitors may take to better understand the everyday behaviors that put them at risk of becoming an ID theft victim.

“Tax season is a time when ID thieves are ready to pounce and consumers should be on high alert,” said Al Villamil, President of ShredStation. “We wanted to develop a site that isn’t just educational, but a way for the consumer to finally take advantage of a significant service discount during a time when most of us feel Uncle Sam is the one taking advantage.”

Recognizing that many families and businesses are inundated with documents containing sensitive information during tax-filing season, ShredStation developed the program and specialized website to help educated consumers about the importance of shredding documents and destroying sensitive information.

Customers will be able to use the discount on ShredStation’s Ship to ShredStation service. Ship to ShredStation enables consumers to ship their documents to a ShredStation secure destruction facility using UPS.

When is it safe to shred the documents I use during tax season?

Shred Immediately
Shred all of you ATM receipts after you balance your account.
Banks statements not being kept for tax purposes should be shredded after they are reviewed for errors.

Shred after Three Months
Pay stubs should only be saved for three months if you are applying for a mortgage, otherwise shred them right away – they contain entirely too much information to risk keeping them.

Shred after One year
If there is no significance for tax or other purposes, cancelled checks should be destroyed after one year.
Once your brokerage firm or investment manager provides you with your annual statement, you are free to shred your monthly and quarterly statements.

Shred after Three Years
Tax returns: The IRS has three years to challenge information in your return and six years to conduct an audit based on unreported income.

Shred after Seven Years
Keep tax returns and supporting records, like W-2s and 1099s and bank statements for at least seven years.

Don’t Shred (Save Indefinitely)
Always save Insurance policies, wills and any other legal documents.
Keep records of retirement plan contributions to non-deductible individual retirement plans such as Roth IRA accounts.
