NEC Selects Freescale ColdFire® Processor for New Line of PC-based Digital Lifestyle Products

MCF5328 Device Provides Linux® OS-based Low-Power Processing and Connectivity Solution for Lui Models of Desktop VALUESTAR R PCs

More and more home consumers want instant, easy access to their digital content, often from remote locations. Freescale Semiconductor is helping to meet this “digital lifestyle” need by supplying 32-bit ColdFire® embedded processors for a new line of “Lui” home client/server solutions from NEC Corporation.

NEC has chosen Freescale’s highly integrated, low-power MCF5328 ColdFire processor to provide remote-access capabilities for its Lui models of VALUESTAR R desktop PCs for the home media server market. The MCF5328 processor provides an optimal balance of performance and power efficiency, enabling the PC remoter server board used in the Lui system to operate within a 1 W power envelope.

The MCF5328 device’s integrated Fast Ethernet controller and I2C bus interface allow flexible, industry-standard connectivity. In addition, the MCF5328 runs on the uClinux operating system supplied by Freescale, a key solution for reusing Linux® software and reducing software development cycle times for NEC’s server platform.

Launched by NEC Corporation and NEC Personal Products, Ltd., the Lui products support digital lifestyles in an era of pervasive connectivity and mobility by providing an innovative way to use client/server devices in home networks. The Lui brand means “life with ubiquitous integrated” solutions. Based on this new Lui brand, NEC’s home server/client solutions enable centralized management of digital content in the home (such as video, music and photos). At the heart of the Lui system is a home server PC that allows users to access their digital content with a PC or other remote terminals in any room of the house.

About the MCF5328 ColdFire processor

The MCF5328 processor is a highly integrated 32-bit device based on the powerful V3 ColdFire architecture. Designed for a wide range of consumer and industrial control applications, the MCF5328 enables high performance and outstanding flexibility for virtually any combination of system-to-system, in-system or networked communications. The processor features an integrated Fast Ethernet controller, a USB host On-The-Go (OTG) controller, 32 KB SRAM, and an SVGA LCD controller that helps reduce overall system cost by supporting a variety of LCD panels from a single chip. Advanced features include an enhanced multiply-accumulate (eMAC) unit and an integrated SDRAM controller that supports double data rate (DDR) memory.
