Barnes & Noble Promotes Jaime Carey to Chief Merchandising Officer

Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), the world’s largest bookseller, today announced that Jaime Carey, who has served as Vice President of its Newsstand business, has been promoted to the newly created role of Chief Merchandising Officer. In his new role, Mr. Carey will assume responsibility for the merchandise buying of all departments, including book, music, DVD, magazine and gift.

“I could not be more delighted that Jaime is taking on this new and important role in the company,” said Steve Riggio, Chief Executive Officer of Barnes & Noble, Inc. “He is a widely respected leader who has done a spectacular job with our Newsstand business. I have every confidence that he will take on this new challenge with the same kind of energy and drive that he brought to that business.”

After joining Barnes & Noble in 2003 as Director of Newsstand, Mr. Carey completely overhauled the system for ordering and replenishing magazines and newspapers, developing what is widely regarded as the most efficient supply chain in the industry. Under his leadership, Barnes & Noble has dramatically increased magazine sales, consolidating its position as one of the top magazine retailers in the United States.

Prior to joining Barnes & Noble, Mr. Carey worked for Curtis Circulation Company, one of the largest distributors in North America, where he was Vice President, Client Services. Jaime is a 1982 graduate of Fordham University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in English Literature.
