Enhanced Collaboration Suite Debuts at JavaOne
JavaOne Conference 2008

Liferay, Inc., provider of the leading enterprise open source portal, announced the release of Liferay Portal 5.0 at the 2008 JavaOne conference. The latest version highlights Liferay Portal’s built-in Collaboration Suite, which provides enterprises with enhanced collaboration tools directly integrated into portal-based web applications. A free download of Liferay Portal is available at www.liferay.com.

Liferay Portal 5.0 includes the core collaboration tools needed in today’s enterprises, including:
Blogs, Message Boards, and Wikis
A dynamic tagging system for user-driven categorization
AJAX-based mail client that allows users to send email directly from the portal
Shared calendars, chat and polls
Direct portlet publishing to the MySpace and Facebook networks
Ability to leverage iGoogle gadgets directly within portal deployments

All tools in the suite are complemented by a common set of enhancements such as RSS support, email notifications, comments, rating systems and social bookmarking.

The Collaboration Suite is offered in the context of Liferay’s portal framework and its intuitive system of communities and organizations. “Collaboration and portal technologies connect people to help them work together and share knowledge,” said Brian Chan, Chief Software Architect, Liferay, Inc. “Liferay Portal puts collaboration tools in context — in an easy and structured way.”

Users of the Liferay Collaboration Suite can take advantage of the award-winning portal’s flexible, standards-compliant (JSR 168, 286 beta) SOA framework with support for Web Services, which allows different applications to easily communicate with one another. Liferay’s content management system and full pre-bundled collection of administrative and productivity tools round out the offering, making it easy to develop websites, deploy shared workspaces, and integrate enterprise applications.

In a related announcement, Liferay, Inc. has formed a new relationship with Sun Microsystems. Sun plans on utilizing Liferay Portal 5.0 in its upcoming web collaboration platform; this offering plans to leverage Liferay Portal’s social features and to provide enhanced integration with the Glassfish Application Server.

In its 9th year of development, Liferay Portal is used by global organizations such as the United Nations, World Vision, Lufthansa Flight Training, The French Ministry of Defense, and many major financial institutions and universities.
