Booth #537

Microtune®, Inc. (NASDAQ: TUNE) today announced that a new class of ultra-fast wideband cable modems featuring its MicroTuner™ MT2170 tuner chip has achieved certification status by CableLabs® for the DOCSIS® 3.0 specifications.

Microtune’s MT2170 tuner, along with multiple certified DOCSIS 3.0 cable modems, will be showcased in Microtune’s booth (Number 537) at The Cable Show, the largest convention and exhibition for cable and telecommunications in the United States. The show will be held at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, May 18-20, 2008.

DOCSIS 3.0 modems can now quadruple downstream transmission speeds to at least 160 Mbps in residential data and voice services and 160 Mbps in video and business services. This ultra-fast Internet throughput permits cable operators to cost-effectively offer compelling, competitive new bandwidth-intensive Internet services, including high-definition video downloads, video file exchanges, time-shifted and place-shifted video, Internet-Protocol (IP) voice and interactive on-line gaming.

The first certification last week (in Certification Wave 58) of DOCSIS 3.0 cable modems in the industry will help drive the rollout of cable’s ultra high-speed telecommunications services. DOCSIS 3.0 certification ensures that cable products meet strict requirements for interoperability with U.S. cable networks and with other certified devices, an essential step for manufacturers in moving their cable products from prototypes into full production.

“We congratulate our customers on DOCSIS 3.0 certification, and we are proud to be the tuner supplier that helped them to accelerate their adoption of revolutionary new DOCSIS 3.0 capabilities in their next-generation cable products,” said James A. Fontaine, Microtune President and CEO. “Microtune offers the only wideband silicon tuner today proven to enable certifiable DOCSIS 3.0 broadband cable modems.”

ABOUT MICROTUNE’S WIDEBAND DOCSIS 3.0 TUNER

The MicroTuner™ MT2170 is a 1-gigahertz (GHz) input tuner based on the new CableLabs® DOCSIS® 3.0 specification. It functions as a ‘gateway’ component—it receives and tunes the signals, embedded with data and/or voice, delivered over the cable network to the subscriber. When integrated into cable modems, Embedded Multimedia Terminal Adaptors (EMTAs) or video-over-IP set-top boxes, the MT2170 tuner is engineered to deliver impressive downstream data speeds (Mbps) via a wide IF bandwidth (up to 96 MHz), enabling cable operators to efficiently offer bandwidth-intensive services at a very competitive cost.

The MT2170 tuner supports DOCSIS 3.0 channel bonding, a technology that combines four- to-eight DOCSIS channels to significantly increase downstream data rates. The MT2170 can accept bonded channels within IF bandwidths up to 96 MHz when paired with a DOCSIS 3.0-capable demodulator such as Texas Instruments’ Puma 5. In effect, the tuner offers the equivalent functionality of four conventional DOCSIS 2.0 digital tuners in one highly integrated miniature chip. It shrinks the tuner footprint required and reduces the power consumption by approximately 75% compared to multi-tuner solutions. Equally important, the MT2170 significantly reduces the radio frequency (RF) bill of materials costs.

The MT2170 is also capable of working in extended frequency networks up to 1 GHz, ensuring that cable operators will be able to make effective use of the additional spectrum provided by future network upgrades.

The MT2170 tuner is part of Microtune’s portfolio of products for the cable TV industry. ABOUT CABLE LABS CERTIFICATION

Certified cable modems successfully navigate an extensive series of CableLabs’ tests that ensure that the cable modem is built to CableLabs’ DOCSIS specifications. The DOCSIS specifications define a common platform to deliver high-speed data over two-way cable plant. As electronics components central to cable modem system operation, Microtune’s tuners provide the radio frequency functionality that enable consumers to send and receive video, data and voice services via the high-speed cable connection.
