Gaining visibility on the Internet is a tricky process that is governed by search engines. Willow Glen Lighting learned this lesson when they gave up their web address to a community in San Jose, California with the same name. Their subsequent fall from search engine status inspired a unique contest designed to bring them back up the ladder. Beginning on May 24, anyone who provides valid links to their site could win up to $1,000.00 in home lighting products.

Lighting at Willow Glen offers quality craftsman-style lighting products from their store in the Willow Glen neighborhood of San Jose, California. A pioneer in online sales, the company had achieved a very high search engine rating in their twelve years online. Last July, however, Lighting at Willow Glen was asked to give up their domain name so it could be used to promote businesses and services in the community of Willow Glen. Being good neighbors, they agreed to change the name of their site from WillowGlen.com to www.LightingAtWillowGlen.com.

Little did the company know that the address change would cause their search engine rating to plunge so far down in the ranks that their Internet activity literally disappeared overnight. Owner Paul Cullen said, “We started brainstorming the problem and our IT man came up with the idea of a contest that would make use of the very search engine technology that took away our business.”

The company learned that the way to achieve status with a search engine is to have a quality links from relevant sites. Therefore, the object of this contest is to reach anyone with control over a site relating to lighting. This includes, but is not limited to: interior design, architecture, electrical contractors, general contractors and home owners. Although contestants may simply put links in place, they are requested to contact contest {at} LightingAtWillowGlen(.)com for suggestions as to how to make the links more effective.

Cullen said, “We especially would like to put the challenge out to all those “geeks” who play on the Internet. You could easily win your next year’s Christmas gift shopping budget!”

Prize winners can receive up to $1,000.00 credit toward lighting products. For more information, visit www.LightingAtWillowGlen.com/about-contest.
