For the ninth consecutive year, PMC-Sierra and the Alzheimer Society of B.C. hosted the successful “Forget Me Not” Golf Tournament on May 15, 2008 at the Northview Golf and Country Club in Surrey, B.C. The tournament raised more than $525,000 for research to assist the 64,000 people in British Columbia who have Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. Over the past 14 years, the tournament has raised more than $5.1 million dollars to support Alzheimer Society research, programs and services.

“Alzheimer’s disease and dementia directly impact the lives of a growing number of individuals, families and businesses in British Columbia and across Canada,” said Rosemary Rawnsley, Executive Director of the Alzheimer Society of B.C. “Our goal is to improve the quality of life for those who have the disease and related dementias and to advance scientific research to find the cause and the cure. Contributions from companies like PMC-Sierra ultimately bring us closer to that goal.”

An estimated 450,000 people in Canada have Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. Each year, approximately 14,000 British Columbians develop dementia, whereas the rest of Canada is projected to be 97,000. Currently, there are more than 24 million people in the world with Alzheimer’s or a related disease, which is projected to rise to 81 million by the year 2040.
