EDF Energies Nouvelles (Paris:EEN) is launching construction of a 7 MWp solar photovoltaic farm on land belonging to the Narbonne municipal authorities. This is one of the largest solar farms currently under construction in mainland France. It is scheduled to enter service by year-end 2008.

The future ground-based plant is located on wasteland in the Malvezy industrial zone of Narbonne (South of France). With a capacity of 7 MWp, it will supply the public electricity grid with the equivalent of the annual electricity consumption of over 4,200 people.

Construction is currently entering an active phase. The first structures supporting the solar panels are currently being put in place, as well as the inverters converting the direct current from the solar panels into alternating current. The 95,000 thin film technology modules supplied by US company First Solar will be delivered to the site in late July. Work is scheduled for completion by the autumn, with commissioning due to take place by the end of 2008.

Solar photovoltaic has become EDF Energies Nouvelles’ second avenue of expansion after wind energy. The Group has commissioned its first solar projects in Italy, Spain and the United States. It aims to build 400 MWp by 2011 for its own account and for third parties.
