IBM Achieves Fastest Growth Among Top Storage Software Vendors

IBM today announced the fastest worldwide storage software growth among the top vendors in the fourth quarter of 2005, according to data released by IDC[1]. Growing at 33 percent, IBM outperformed both EMC and Symantec and was the only one of the three top vendors to increase its revenue share, resulting in a year-over-year market share points increase of nearly two points, as reported by IDC.

“Companies are struggling to manage mountains of business data, and that’s driving customers to adopt IBM’s broad portfolio of storage software and hardware,” said Laura Sanders, vice president, IBM TotalStorage products and solutions. “IBM’s open approach offered by our software, together with our services and consulting expertise and our leadership in virtualization, are helping customers improve storage utilization and application availability while freeing them of the proprietary lock-in by a single vendor.”

According to the report, IBM showed the top growth rate in the Backup and Archive functional markets together with the largest share points increase for that segment among all the vendors measured by IDC. IDC also reports that, when compared with the top three vendors, IBM showed the highest growth rate for two other functional markets — Storage Replication and Storage Resource Management (SRM). IBM storage software manages multi-vendor storage systems such as EMC, Hitachi, Sun, Dell and HP.
