Passport thefts - comment from Callcredit

Helen Mann, Team Leader - Direct Sales at Callcredit comments:

“The recent theft of 3,000 passports from a secure van in Oldham should serve as a warning to organisations who continue to rely on paper based verification checks. While the passports stolen were blank, it would be possible for a criminal gang to input biographical information of their own, not necessarily getting the chip information right, and then use the passports as paper based identification to open up bank accounts or gain employment

“By electronically verifying an individual this risk would be eliminated. Electronic verification is more reliable, more cost effective and crucially more secure than old fashioned paper based checks – something that lenders and employers need to understand if they are to protect themselves against fraud.”
