Details of 84,000 prisoners in England and Wales, stored on an unencrypted computer memory stick, were revealed lost today. Experts at leading British designer and manufacturer of encrypted hard drives, Stonewood, will be introducing an encrypted memory stick within weeks to the market which would have prevented what is being described as a massive failure of duty by ministers.

“Companies and individuals seldom recognise the value of their data until such time as it has been breached or lost. Sensitive data should never be stored on non-secure, unencrypted portable devices,” said Grant Gutteridge, Director at Stonewood. “It is deeply alarming that people are unaware that the technology exists to securely store confidential personal details and it’s the responsibility of everyone to ensure they Encrypt their sensitive data.”

The new encrypted USB Flash drive, part of Stonewood’s Eclypt freedom family of encrypted portable devices, includes an external USB hard disk drive featuring 320GB 0r 500GB capacity means there are no excuses for these data losses.

Coming in the wake of a number of high profile data losses, the missing device includes un-encrypted details of every single prisoner in England and Wales including 10,000 prolific offenders as well as names, dates of births and some release dates.

Stonewood note that to ensure no kind of confidential information is ever made vulnerable to loss or theft, sensitive data should always be encrypted, policies implemented and more importantly adhered to.
