Support for two major wireless carriers at Minneapolis Convention Center debuts as thousands of attendees flock to Minneapolis for historic event
An indoor wireless coverage system designed by Powerwave Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:PWAV), a global source of wireless infrastructure solutions, is supporting access to wireless voice and data services for the more than 150,000 attendees expected to converge on the Minneapolis Convention Center this week for CivicFest, a vibrant civic festival celebrating Minnesota and American History, democracy and the U.S. Presidency, being held in conjunction with the 2008 Republican National Convention.
As part of a project that began during the early planning stages for the Republican National Convention and CivicFest, Powerwave designed and installed a Neutral Host Distributed Antenna System (DAS) for customer and business partner InSite Wireless, LLC, that now enables customers of two of the nation’s largest commercial wireless service providers to access wireless voice and data services while on the premises of the Minneapolis Convention Center.
“We are very pleased that Powerwave’s wireless coverage solutions will be a part of such a historic event for the City of Minneapolis, and the nation as a whole,” said Dave Quinn, vice president, Global Wireless Solutions. “Over the years, we have been involved in bringing wireless coverage to dozens of large and complex venues, such as the Minneapolis Convention Center. These venues require the transmission of clear, concise wireless signals over long distances. By leveraging a combination of RF and fiber optic technologies in our DAS systems, Powerwave supports strong wireless signals, increases system up time, and enables commercial users to experience uninterrupted access to wireless voice and data services.”
The Minneapolis Convention Center’s DAS system is based on the Powerwave Wideband Radio Head (WRH) Technology. With Powerwave’s DAS, RF signals from various operator Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) are combined, converted to light and transmitted via a fiber distribution network to the strategically placed WRH remote units. At the remote units, the light is converted back to RF, amplified and distributed throughout the facility via a series of coaxial cables and antennas. Coverage areas for the Minneapolis Convention Center DAS include the exhibit halls, mezzanine, entrance hall, and auditorium and meeting rooms. To meet the convention center’s strict aesthetic requirements, Powerwave designed and developed custom antenna enclosures that resemble the sign boards at the convention center.
In addition to the Minneapolis Convention Center, Powerwave has expertise in creating DAS systems for large event venues such as the Moscone Center in San Francisco, the Athens Athletic Center (Greece), university campuses including the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky., and hotels and casinos such as The Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
