Brunswick Corporation Switches to Blue Coat WebFilter Database and Cloud-Based Service for URL Filtering

Adds Blue Coat WebFilter to ProxySG Appliances for Acceptable Usage and Policy Enforcement and Malware Protection

Blue Coat Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:BCSI), the leader in WAN Application Delivery and Secure Web Gateway, today announced that Brunswick Corporation has selected Blue Coat WebFilter™ to run on the Blue Coat® ProxySG® appliances it already has in place at its Internet gateway. Brunswick also uses ProxySG appliances to secure, control and accelerate its e-Business applications that support sales and customer activities for over 7,000 dealers of its Mercury Marine engine division. Blue Coat WebFilter, an industry-leading URL filtering database coupled with the Blue Coat WebPulse™ real-time cloud-based service, replaces a third-party URL database the company had previously been using.

Blue Coat WebFilter, in conjunction with ProxySG and Blue Coat® ProxyAV® appliances and the WebPulse service, provide a layered approach for inbound and outbound Internet gateway protection from spyware, malware, mobile malicious code, viruses, trojans, botnets, phishing and Web 2.0 threats. Blue Coat WebFilter enables enterprises and organizations to enforce acceptable usage policies and comply with laws and regulations.

The Blue Coat WebFilter product utilizes an on-proxy database representing billions of Web pages of real Internet usage. Unrecognized URLs are sent to the WebPulse service, a virtual “in-the-cloud” extension to Blue Coat WebFilter, for checking against a master database or dynamic rating. All requests to the WebPulse service go through an analysis for malicious threats using a combination of machine rating, a honey grid with ten threat engines and human assessment. Any new sources of malicious threats are added to Blue Coat WebFilter. WebPulse now receives over 100 million requests for URL categorization and Website analysis per day.

In conjunction with ProxySG appliances, Blue Coat WebFilter can monitor usage, provide coaching or advisory notices to employees or enforce policies to a fine level of detail, based on categorization, user, location, protocol, time of day, content-type and other criteria.
