WHEN: 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26
WHERE:
Golden Oak Community School, 25201 Via Princessa, Santa Clarita, CA 91321 (Thomas Brothers Page 4551, J-6)
WHAT: Smart boards, surround sound systems, digital cameras and other technological advances will be demonstrated to local city and school officials, a leading homebuilder and others. Classrooms at Golden Oak Community School are among the most advanced to ensure greater academic performance and comprehension. The technology and equipment used by teachers mimic the type of “instant access” students receive today via the Internet and video games to create lively and engaging learning experiences. The demonstration follows a dedication ceremony in which the school’s new mascot is unveiled.
SPECIAL VISUAL:
The classroom demonstration will include an “Are You Smarter Than a Sixth Grader?” contest between students and adult dignitaries, including Santa Clarita Mayor Bob Kellar. The two groups will have questions posed to them via the Smart Board and sound system to test their skills and knowledge in geography, science and history, among other subjects. The demonstration will be led by teacher Kim Tredick, a Milken Educator Award recipient.
WHO:
School Principal Gayle Abril; Santa Clarita Mayor Bob Kellar; Jim Bizzelle, Vice President of Community Development for Pardee Homes; Sulphur Springs School District Superintendent Dr. Robert Nolet; Dr. Kerry Clegg, president, Sulphur Springs School District Board of Trustees; and nearly 400 K-6 students.
BACKGROUND:
The Sulphur Springs School District, the second oldest school district in Los Angeles County, opened Golden Oak Community School in partnership with Pardee Homes, builder of the planned Golden Valley residential community that surrounds the school and the nearby, nearly completed Fair Oaks Ranch community. District administrators authorized the full installation of new technologies at Golden Oak Community School following earlier successes of similar equipment used at another Sulphur Springs school built.
