The Ministry of Defence has today revealed the most recent data loss, a portable computer drive containing personal information of a large number of Armed Forces personnel, has been revealed missing. It is not yet confirmed if the drive was not encrypted. Just a few months ago the MoD revealed that 26 unencrypted, portable memory sticks containing classified information had also been lost or stolen.

How can the MoD and other organisations insure against a loss of data and breach of security such as this? Experts at Stonewood Group, British leading designer and manufacturer of encrypted hard drives, advise that with the right technology in place, companies negate at least some of these risks.

Stonewood produces a hardware encrypted, portable hard drive, which protects data at rest in a situation like this. This innovative and compact hard drive with a capacity of up to 500GB, is part of its Eclypt Freedom family of encrypted, portable USB devices. This drive keeps data safe even if the drive is stolen, by encrypting and decrypting data and preventing unauthorized access to the information.

“Organisations and individuals must diligently protect data by managing and storing it on secure, encrypted devices. The importance of protecting confidential, personal details, often goes unnoticed until it is too late,” said Grant Gutteridge, Director at Stonewood Group.
