KPIT Cummins announces winner of the first ever ‘Techie Student of the Year’ Award

Pune, India – October 14, 2008: KPIT Cummins, a specialist solutions partner to Global Manufacturing corporations recently announced the winner of the first ever ‘Techie Student of the Year’ Award. The award recognizes technical and professional talent within the 1st and 2nd year engineering students. The award was given on the concluding day of TecXpedition ’08, the mega technology extravaganza at KPIT Cummins.

Over 2700 students of the 1st and 2nd year engineering from 5 colleges in Pune participated in the competition, the list of colleges includes – Sinhgad College of Engineering, Maharashtra Institute of Technology, Cummins College of Engineering for Women, Maharashtra Academy of Engineering, Vishwakarma Institute of Technology and Pune Institute of Computer Technology (PICT). Based on an aptitude test, 50 students were selected to undergo a workshop at KPIT Cummins Hinjawadi campus. Students got a unique opportunity to interact with Business Managers, Technical Leaders and senior Human Resource professionals including Mr. Sachin Tikekar, Chief of People Operations of KPIT Cummins, with whom the students had an open session.

· Talent recognition competition for 1st and 2nd year engineering students

· Students get exposed to real-time corporate world and get the first hand experience of working under Project Management framework

· Students got an opportunity to interact with senior managers from Business, HR and Technology.

· The honor of 1st prize went to Govind Menon, 1st year Computer Science and Engineering student of PICT, Pranav Panage, 2nd Year, Computer Science student of Sinhgad College of Engineering was the 1st Runner up while Rutvik Karve, student of 1st year IT at PICT was adjudged the 2nd Runner up.

Expressing pleasure after interacting with students, Chief of People Operations at KPIT Cummins, Sachin Tikekar said, “We want to engage with students at early stages of their education to enhance their talent and make them ready for the industry. ‘ Techie Student of the Year’ competition aims to leverage our technical expertise and infrastructure to the benefit of the student community, and to give them an exposure to real-time corporate work environment. This year would see more initiatives launched by KPIT Cummins to boost collaboration with Academia to develop talent for bigger prospects globally.”

Training and Placement Authorities of the colleges expressed excitement and satisfaction. P Subrahmanyam, Director, Industry Academia Collaborations, Maharashtra Institute of Technology, Pune, said “it was the first time in Pune that a company had connected with the 1st and 2nd year students. Our students were extremely excited as they got an opportunity to interact with the Senior Management of KPIT Cummins. He added that this is an excellent initiative and a win-win opportunity for all”.

Echoing the feeling Ms Chitralekha Subhedar, Secretary of the Society for Computer Technology and Research (SCTR) Trust –, said, “Our students were very happy about the real-time corporate exposure they received. We believe that this interaction of academia and industry sets an example for more such initiatives that are not just a competition but also involve trainings and projects. I urge companies to offer internships to students spread across all the 4 years of engineering. It was a very fresh idea as for the first time 1st and 2nd year students got an industry interface”.
