Rackable Systems to Leverage Solid-State Technology in Eco-Logical™ Servers and OmniStor Arrays
Storage Networking World Fall 2008
Rackable Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: RACK), a leading provider of servers and storage products for large-scale data centers, today announced that it will support Intel’s industry leading solid-state drives (SSDs) in the company’s Eco-Logical™ server and storage systems. Rackable Systems’ SSD-based products continue the company’s track record of rapidly delivering high-performance, energy-efficient solutions. The new products are being unveiled this week at Storage Networking World 2008 at Intel’s Booth #300.
“The enhanced capabilities of Intel’s solid-state drives allow us to augment the storage performance of our products in dramatic ways,” said Giovanni Coglitore, CTO and SVP of Engineering at Rackable Systems. “By combining our award-winning products with Intel’s high performance solid-state drives, we can deliver an advanced product offering that provides measurably improved value to our customers.”
Rackable Systems will utilize Intel’s SSD technology to provide its customers with server and storage systems that offer enhanced performance and increased energy efficiency, in line with the company’s core technology focus. Intel’s SSDs offer much greater reliability than traditional hard disk drives (HDD) and in many cases can eliminate the need for RAID, delivering additional savings. In addition, SSD drives produce less heat than traditional HDDs at even much higher performance levels.
Rackable Systems will leverage Intel’s 32GB and 64GB single-level cell (SLC) drives in servers that are designed for the enterprise, and will use 80GB and 160GB multi-level cell (MLC) drives for those that are intended for low-write-rate environments. The SSD-based server and storage systems will be available for traditional data center configurations and with the company’s award-winning ICE Cube™ modular data center.
“The low-power and high performance-per-watt of our solid-state drive technology allows companies like Rackable Systems to deliver innovative new energy-efficient products like the Eco-Logical servers that will lower customers’ total cost of ownership,” said Randy Wilhelm, general manager, Intel NAND Products Group. “We believe the new SSD drives provide an opportunity for vendors like Rackable Systems to deliver thermally-efficient hardware to customers while also providing a reliable, high-performance server solution.”
