Michael Dell Calls for Global Emphasis on Information Technology to Further Economic, Societal Gains
Michael Dell today encouraged delegates from more than 80 countries here for the 2006 World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT) to take steps to embrace the economic and societal benefits afforded by widespread use of information technology. Mr. Dell delivered a keynote address in Austin, home to approximately 3,200 technology firms1 and the city where he founded Dell Inc. in 1984. Today, Dell sells more computer systems than any other company worldwide, is ranked number 25 on the Fortune 500 and has customers in more than 180 countries.
“While information technology has sparked extraordinary economic and human progress in recent years, it’s also true that its potential is only beginning to be met and in many countries its promise has gone unfulfilled,” said Mr. Dell.
About 2,000 business, government and academic leaders from more than 80 countries are attending the biennial WCIT here to discuss and create policy recommendations for global digital access, health care and IT privacy and security. In his speech, Mr. Dell addressed the role governments can play in creating a successful IT sector, citing the importance of promoting a high-quality education system, modern technological infrastructure and conditions necessary to attract foreign investment such as tax incentives and regulations that foster, not stifle, innovation.
