IBM Australia and Mater Health Services unite on Smart Hospital strategy

Mater Health Services (MHS) and IBM Australia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly develop and implement innovative information technologies (IT) within acute healthcare environments. The MOU aims to drastically improve clinical outcomes and patient safety and ultimately be a leading example for IT within the Australian healthcare sector.

The MOU has established the Smart Hospital Consortium, a strategic alliance between IBM and MHS Brisbane. The Consortium will further MHS’s existing Smart Hospital agenda, which aims to use ICT to fundamentally change healthcare delivery. MHS Brisbane’s healthcare network cares for around 500,000 people through seven hospitals and other facilities that employ more than 5,000 staff.

“We recognise that the road for hospital patients can be very bumpy, so a cornerstone of our Smart Hospital strategy is to use technology to significantly improve that experience,” said Malcolm Thatcher, Chief Information Officer at MHS Brisbane. “We also aim to adopt innovative technologies to strengthen clinical practice, thereby improving patient outcomes.”
