Global Issues
Hosted by Zee Entertainment Enterprises, Wipro Technologies, and NDTV
New York, NY—The Paley Center for Media’s International Council, a
worldwide forum of leading international media and communications
executives, held the thirteenth meeting this week in New Delhi and in
Bangalore, India. Marking the first time the Council has convened in
this global trendsetting country, the gathering was hosted by Zee
Entertainment Enterprises, Wipro Technologies, and NDTV. The
Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and the
U.S.-India Business Council (USIBC) served as knowledge partners.
India-arguably the epicenter of media globalization-was the ideal
locale for the International Council to discuss and debate the key
issues and opportunities facing the industry. The International
Council meetings in India illuminated the dynamic ways media and
entertainment is changing both the business and social landscape of
the world’s biggest democracy.
In New Delhi, Indian President Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil met with
attendees at her residence. In addition, Dr. Henry A. Kissinger, who
sits on The Paley Center Board of Trustees, addressed the delegates
about the importance of India in global economic and political
affairs. Other political and business luminaries who participated in
the program included Mr. Anand Sharma, India’s Minister of Information
and Broadcasting, and Mr. Ronnie Screwvala, the founder and chief
executive of UTV. Topics ranged from India’s booming
telecommunications industry, the growing presence of U.S. media
conglomerates in India, the expanding relationships between Bollywood
and Hollywood, to the opportunities presented by India’s enormous
youth market.
The discussions continue d in Bangalore beginning on Tuesday, November
18, with a focus on how technology is reshaping the media marketplace
and the role and responsibility of media to serve as a bridge builder
and connector of cultures as well as a force for change.
“The International Council goes right to the heart of the role the
media plays in the global economy and how it can increase
communication and understanding across all borders,” said Pat
Mitchell, President and CEO of The Paley Center for Media. “India is
the fastest growing entertainment market in the world and is setting
the pace for today’s global business landscape. It was the perfect
gathering place for a robust conversation amongst the world’s media
leaders. And it’s not just outside companies investing in India it is
Indian companies looking beyond their own shores to partner too.”
“We tackled everything from how to promote a free and accurate press
in the largest democracy in the world, to how cutting edge technology,
from online to mobile is transforming the entire media sector. Our
interest and support of India’s dynamic media and entertainment
industry will continue in the United States, where we’re planning
India-focused programs in our New York and Los Angeles facilities. In
addition, we our working closely with the US-India Business Council on
the upcoming FICCI-Frames Conference next February in Mumbai.”

of community across global media players. We are delighted that the
Council has chosen to convene in India this year – our media and
entertainment industry is undergoing a transformational period driven
by strong demographics, global focus and a multitude of consumer

absorbing discussions and debates.”

Paley Centre for Media. As the world’s largest democracy, India has
been at the forefront of journalistic freedom and media growth, not
only among emerging economies but among all nations, historically.
