The Colorado Photonics Industry Association (CPIA) announced today that it has named RealD (formerly Colorlink) of Boulder as the 2008 Colorado Photonics Innovator of the Year. The award was presented at the CPIA Annual Meeting, yesterday, Wednesday November 19, 2008.
The Photonics Innovator of the Year award honors outstanding technological breakthroughs by a Colorado company. Last year RealD acquired Colorlink, a company founded in Colorado in 1990, to supply the key technical components for the next generation of 3D movies. Since the acquisition they have expanded operations in Colorado. There are expected to be 2500 theaters with RealD 3D projection systems installed by the end of next year, making this the breakthrough year for this technology.
CPIA Executive Director, Barbara Ihde said, “RealD is on the cusp of rapid expansion in 3D movie projection, and has an extremely strong potential for implementing optical technology with significant nationwide economic impact.”
“Being named Colorado Photonics Innovator of the Year is truly an honor,” stated Michael V. Lewis, chairman and CEO of RealD. “This is a significant and exciting time in the development and production of 3D and we look forward to further expanding our platform in new and innovate ways.”
