World Economic Forum
Ubiquisys, the leading developer of 3G femtocells, today announced that it has been named as a Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum. The company was selected for its accomplishments as an innovator of the highest calibre, whose technologies will have a deep impact on business and society. The selection was the result of a vigorous selection process, for which the Forum received more than 320 applications from around the world that were evaluated by 44 global technology experts. Previous Technology Pioneers include; Google, Gridpoint, Infosys, Kaspersky Lab and Mozilla Corporation.
Hundreds of millions of people across the world have a both a mobile phone and access to a broadband connection at home or at work. But these two liberating technologies have grown up separately. Ubiquisys has joined them together by pioneering the femtocell, a miniature 3G access point that plugs into a user’s broadband connection. It delivers great indoor coverage, with very fast mobile internet, at very low cost.
“Femtocells make the mobile internet affordable, practical and mainstream. They place the mobile phone at the centre of the knowledge economy. They will spark an explosion in mobile internet usage, and introduce a new generation of presence-aware applications,” said Chris Gilbert, CEO of Ubiquisys. “We are delighted to have received this recognition from the Forum and are excited to see our technology enter the mass market over the next twelve months.”
“We congratulate the 34 newly selected Technology Pioneers for their remarkable achievements and welcome them to the wider community of the World Economic Forum. During these difficult times, we are certain that the technologies driven by these visionary companies will contribute to the next wave of growth, with the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit that characterizes them,” said André Schneider, Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer of the World Economic Forum.
The Technology Pioneers 2009 are active in fields such as in-body computing platforms for personalized healthcare; utility-scale solar power projects; mobile phone authentication methods to assure drug safety in developing nations; miniaturized 3rd generation mobile networks; traceability and assurance over food quality; and electric motors with unprecedented levels of energy efficiency and smart grid solutions. About Ubiquisys
Ubiquisys was formed in 2004 to bring its ground-breaking ZoneGate femtocell technology to market. ZoneGate femtocells are manufactured with Sony UK Tech and are available as standalone units or as part of a residential gateway device such as Netgear’s DVG834GH. The system supports multiple interfaces to the operator’s core network, and is remotely managed and updated using standard TR-069 management systems such as Motive’s Home Device Manager. Ubiquisys’ sole focus is femtocells, and in 2007 it created the Femto Forum to promote standards and partnerships in this fast-emerging industry. In May 2008 ABI Research named Ubiquisys as the world’s leading femtocell vendor in their Femtocell Vendor Matrix. In September 2008 the company announced that Softbank would be the world’s first operator to offer commercial 3G femtocell services using the ZoneGate. Ubiquisys is funded by Accel Partners, Advent Venture Partners, Atlas Venture, Google and T-Mobile Venture Fund. For more information, visit www.ubiquisys.com.
