India TV chairman and editor-in-chief Rajat Sharma has been named as the “Hero” of a nation-wide survey on the movers and shakers of the Indian Media during 2008. The survey was conducted by leading Hindi daily, Hindustan of the Hindustan Times group.

The survey asked readers to sms their choice of “Hindustan ke Hero” for the year 2008 from among 8 media leaders of the country.

In his reaction, Mr Sharma said he was gratified by the trust reposed by the influential audiences of Hindustan and pledged that India TV would continue to set the bar for television news. “The true `Hero’ is the India TV viewer. I see the results as an honour and a validation of the market leadership and trust that India TV was able to forge and maintain, week after week, throughout the year. Also, this is a recognition of the dedication and hard work of my team of 500 colleagues.”

Mr Sharma thanked Hindustan Times group chairperson Shobhana Bhartia and Hindustan editor Mrinal Pande and complimented those declared as the `Hero’ in the seven other categories, viz, Ratan Tata for business, Rahul Gandhi for political leadership, Arvind Adiga for literature, Shahrukh Khan for films, Barack Obama for global leadership, Abhinav Bindra for sports, and Kiran Bedi for social service.

In their citation for Mr Sharma, the editors of Hindustan noted that “with his commitment to win in the market, Mr Sharma changed the very meaning of television news…and he did not rest until he had taken India TV right at the top.”
