Conference Focuses on Exploring Creativity through Literature and the Arts
The internationally acclaimed author Salman Rushdie will be a featured speaker at the third annual Gathering event July 16-19, 2009 at Keystone College campus in Northeast Pennsylvania.
For two years The Gathering has attracted literature lovers, writers, artists, teachers, and avid readers in an exploration of creative expression through fiction, nonfiction, poetry, dance, theater, film, and children’s literature.
The Gathering features lectures, readings, workshops, discussion groups, panels, and a variety of small and intimate social events. Participants in the annual conference explore creativity through a theme, which in 2009 will be “There and Back Again: Time, Place and Story.”
“The Gathering continues to grow in popularity every year, and this year we are proud to host some of the most prominent writers in the world,” commented Keystone President Ned Boehm. “Other authors to speak this year include Gregory Maguire, Cambodian author Loung Ung, documentary filmmaker Rebecca Marshall Ferris, poet Nancy Willard, Joanna Rudge Long, Nancy McKinley and others.”
The Gathering is sponsored by Keystone College. The college and the Lackawanna County Library System are also teaming up to sponsor a free lecture by Rushdie on the evening of Friday, July 17 at the Scranton Cultural Center in Scranton, PA. The lecture is open to the public.
Additional sponsors for The Gathering include WVIA, Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority, and the Willary Foundation.
