Kodak Offers Innovative Digital Technology For Its Dental Digital Radiography Systems
A clinical study published by the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) indicated that advanced digital technology from Eastman Kodak Company helped dentists find cavities in 20% more cases than they were able to find with traditional methods, enabling earlier diagnosis and treatment for patients.
Kodak’s dental systems group offers the technology — Logicon Caries Detector TM Software — as an optional component with its intraoral digital radiography (DR) systems as an aid to helping dentists detect cavities between permanent teeth. This computer-aided-detection software helps sharpen the systems’ competitive edge and, in turn, provides dentists an important decision-support tool to improve patient care.
Kodak recently purchased the software from Northrop Grumman Corporation and GA Industries, Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., which held a patent and license on the technology, respectively. Terms of the purchase were not disclosed. Previously, Kodak used the software under a licensing agreement with GA Industries. The innovative software automatically highlights possible abnormalities on patients’ digital dental x-ray images, signaling the dentist to take a close look for tooth decay or fractures.
“I believe Logicon Caries Detector Software is mandatory for every practice that wants to discover and control tooth decay at the earliest most opportune time,†said Dr. Scott Benjamin, a Sidney, New York, dentist who has tested and currently uses a Kodak system enabled with Logicon Caries Detector Software.
