New Openwave Service Helps Increase Data Transfer Rates over Wireless Data Networks While Decreasing Bandwidth Consumption

LAS VEGAS, Nevada, CTIA Wireless 2009 – March 31, 2009 – Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), one of the world’s leading software innovators enabling revenue-generating personalized services which converge the mobile and broadband experience, today announced Openwave® Accelerator, the latest service enabler for Openwave® Integra, a next generation mobile internet service management platform. Openwave Accelerator, which compliments existing optimization functions within core Integra, increases data transfer rates over wireless data networks while decreasing bandwidth consumption. The result is an optimized network: faster browsing speeds for the subscriber at a lower total cost for the operator.

“As open mobile Internet browsing becomes more popular, smart phone and feature phone users in particular expect an experience that resembles the one on their PC, which means they are looking for fast connections and web pages that load quickly for more immediate access to content,” said Dan Nguyen, interim vice president of product management and product marketing, Openwave. “Speed, or a lack of speed, is something that resonates with all consumers who typically associate speed with the quality of a network and services. On the other hand, the rise in data usage as a result of more smartphones, laptops and feature phones is taxing networks and increasing operator costs in having to provide more bandwidth. Openwave Accelerator helps operators optimize their networks, increasing data transfer rates and reducing bandwidth consumption irrespective of end device while preserving the visual quality of the content displayed.”

Accelerator is part of Openwave’s Mobile Internet value-added Services that are available for the Integra Mobile Internet Service Platform. Integra’s plug-in framework means that all data traffic routed through Integra can benefit from Accelerator. Openwave Accelerator reduces service latency and the volume of data going over the air to the mobile device by applying enhanced content compression techniques (image and javascript in particular) and content caching to speed up access and content delivery without affecting the visual quality.

These multiple acceleration techniques employed by Openwave Accelerator optimize the number of transactions necessary to deliver content and the volume of data per transaction with the result that the requirement for network expansions is reduced or deferred. Simultaneously, the network can handle more concurrent interactions with the same resources so that less network shortages impact the billable traffic.

Openwave Accelerator is expected to be generally available through Openwave in the second quarter of calendar year 2009.
