Homeowners Can Save Money, Improve Comfort with Energy-Efficient Upgrades
Today, Oncor launched the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program, a new initiative designed to help homeowners save energy. Home Performance with ENERGY STAR offers a technically sophisticated approach to improving energy efficiency and comfort in homes, without compromising indoor air quality, health, or safety. Any existing home served by Oncor’s electric delivery system is eligible for the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program.
Oncor is partnering with the Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy to make this regional program available as part of the Take A Load Off, TexasSM energy efficiency initiative.
“Oncor is pleased to partner with ENERGY STAR to help Texans save energy and control energy costs,” Michael Stockard, Oncor Director of Energy Efficiency Programs, said. “Home Performance with ENERGY STAR takes the guesswork out of home improvement by showing consumers how to make homes more comfortable and energy efficient year round — even in hot Texas summers. Through the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program, homeowners learn about many important issues simultaneously: energy conservation, indoor air quality, health and safety, and environmental protection.”
Home Performance with ENERGY STAR uses the services of certified, specially trained contractors who understand the subtle and complex interactions between a home, its surrounding environment, and its inhabitants. The contractor conducts a thorough home performance evaluation using the latest diagnostic tools to test the home’s overall performance. The evaluation includes testing for air leaks using a special tool called a “blower door” and looking for opportunities to improve the home’s insulation, windows, heating and cooling systems, duct work, appliances, and lighting. The contractor also conducts safety testing to ensure that dangerous gases, such as carbon monoxide, are not leaking into the home.
When the assessment is complete, the contractor recommends specific improvements, the cost of making those upgrades, and the projected energy and cost savings. The contractor then helps the customer carry out an energy-saving home improvement plan that’s right for their home and budget. Recommendations vary, but could include installing energy-efficient heating and cooling systems and windows, sealing air leaks, adding insulation, repairing or replacing duct work, and upgrading lighting.
To help eligible homeowners offset the cost of making energy-efficient home improvements, Oncor is providing a choice of cash incentives up to $1,500 or third-party financing for qualified customers. Once the upgrades are complete, the homeowner will receive a Home Performance Certificate to document the work, the energy savings and environmental benefits.
“Homeowners are increasingly savvy about energy efficiency. With an ENERGY STAR whole-house approach, they can improve comfort and save money while preserving our environment,” says Chandler von Schrader, Environmental Protection Agency.
