city-wide contest raises awareness for an environmentally friendly lifestyle
Mumbai, April 22, 2009: RECC, the manufacturer of the REVA electric car, is celebrating World Earth Day by encouraging people to adopt an environmentally friendly lifestyle. The company has initiated a three day ‘Spot the Green Car’ contest that began in Bangalore on Monday, April 20, 2009 and will conclude on World Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22, 2009.
Five REVA cars have each been branded with a letter from the word EARTH. The electric vehicles are driving throughout different hotspots in Bangalore and have an SMS number that people can text the word “REVA EARTH” to and thus enter the contest. The cars are handing out information on “10 Ways to Go Green” and distributing 300 potted seeds. REVA encourages the citizens of Bangalore to plant and grow saplings and take an active role in protecting the environment.
“It is important for each of us to realize the simple ways we can go green in our everyday lifestyle and reduce climate change,” said R Chandramouli, President, Sales & Marketing, REVA Electric Car Company. “As a company we are committed to providing eco-friendly transportation and reducing carbon emissions. We are excited to be part of celebrating Earth Day 2009 in Bangalore.”
REVA believes that companies and individuals have the power and responsibility to protect our environment and take an active role in environmental stewardship. The contest aims to highlight the global impact that community level and individualistic efforts can achieve in mitigating climate change. The contest included giving away of eco prizes such as BPL StudyLites and gift vouchers from Mother Earth, the green shop.
Ten Ways to go green
1) Reduce, reuse, recycle: Do your part to reduce waste by choosing reusable products instead of disposables. Buy products with minimal packaging. Avoid using plastic bags.
2) Plant this tree: If you have the means to plant a tree, start digging. During photosynthesis, trees and other plants absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen.
3) Change a light bulb: Whereever practical, replace regular light bulbs with CFL bulbs. CFL bulbs lasts ten times longer than incandescent bulbs, use two thirds less energy, and give off 70% less heat.
4) Encourage others to conserve: Share information about recycling and energy conservation with your friends, neighbours and coworkers.
5) Use the ‘OFF” switch: Save electricity and reduce global warming by turning off lights when you leave a room, and using only as much light as you need. And remember to turn off your television, video player, stereo and computer when you are not using them.
6) Drive less and drive smart: Less driving means fewer emissions. Besides saving fuel, walking and biking are great forms of exercise. Use public transport as much as possible. A car share scheme can reduce your travel footprint.
7) Use less hot water: Set your water heater at an optimal temperature to save energy. Buy low flow shower heads to save hot water.
8) Buy energy efficient products: When it is time to buy a new car, choose from a range of energy efficiency models and one that offers lower emissions.
9) Use less air conditioning: Adding insulation to your walls, doors and windows can lower your electricity cost more than 25%; by reducing the amount of energy you need to cool your home.
10) Drive the REVAi
