Corporate Social Responsibility Report Articulates Smart Business Practices

Teradata Corporation (NYSE: TDC), the world’s largest company solely focused on data warehousing and enterprise analytics, today announced the release of its comprehensive Teradata Corporate Social Responsibility Report, which articulates Teradata’s plan for sustainable business initiatives in three areas – people, planet and profits.

“As an independent company since October 2007, we are making a fresh start by promoting a new culture of environmental sustainability based on innovation, while building upon on our significant accomplishments in previous years. It is a cultural awareness that will not only cascade throughout our organization, but expand beyond our facilities to our ecosystem of business partners, customers, and community,” said Bruce Langos, chief operations officer, Teradata Corporation. “Our data warehousing technology delivers economic benefits to our customers. Our facilities lessen our impact on the environment, and our employees strengthen our commitment to society for a sustainable future.”

The Triple Bottom Line

The Teradata Corporate Social Responsibility Report is the foundation for Teradata’s current and future policies, best practices, objectives, and performance on a broad range of sustainability issues, which impact the triple bottom line – profit, people, and planet.

Corporate Profitability

As business intelligence becomes increasingly important for success, the world’s leading businesses are coming to Teradata for powerful solutions that maximize the power required for complex analytics, and, at the same time, minimize the consumption of space and energy. The Teradata Purpose-Built Platform Family delivers energy and data center space savings, with power consumption and cooling requirements that are well below the industry average. The basic architecture and design of products will continue to evolve by leveraging industry-leading processor technologies to deliver highly efficient data warehouse performance.

The People Can Make a Difference

The report describes how Teradata not only fosters respect for the individual, but also extends respect for the environment and for society at large. The community relations program, Teradata Cares, leverages employee volunteerism and corporate giving in three areas: improving education, with a global focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics; strengthening neighborhoods and communities; and helping the environment by supporting global sustainability projects. These efforts reflect Teradata’s pledge to build strong and vibrant communities, improve the quality of life and make a positive difference in the neighborhoods where Teradata employees live and work.

Sustainability for the Planet

According to Langos, “Our customers, investors and communities are increasingly looking to Teradata to help deal with environmental issues. To meet these challenges, we are identifying and adopting existing best practices across our business and driving innovation. Teradata is focused on innovation in the design of data warehouse hardware and software, in how we work with suppliers, in how we package and transport products, and in how customers use their data warehouses and analytics.” For example:
Teradata switched to LCD monitors to create efficiency for its customers, which reduced shipping weight by 77 percent, shrunk packaging materials by 78 percent and delivered power savings of 60 percent.
The door to the Teradata platform was replaced with a new patented cooling door designed to reduce the energy necessary to cool its components by 25 percent.

These innovations along with others have significantly reduced energy consumption for Teradata customers. As another example, a major telecommunications company recently replaced a previous-generation Teradata platform with a more efficient model providing a 61 percent reduction in the energy necessary to power and cool the system, along with 77 percent reduction of data center floor space. The organization calculated the total energy savings at more than $500,000 per year. It replaced an over-200-node system with one of fewer than 60 nodes, yet with increased computing power. The saving was in excess of 3.5 million kilowatt-hours per year, which is enough to power more than 300 homes for a year.

One recent initiative is the application for membership in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Leaders program. To reach program compliance, Teradata will be preparing an inventory management plan for U.S. facilities to aid in developing earth-friendly practices, and plans to report on sustainable policies and procedures in the future.
