Result of extensive R&D effort for Tier IV standards compliance
· CtrlS to save 30% on energy cost by installing this innovative solution
· Highly secure: Water cannot enter the data center, therefore the data is completely safe
· Biggest green initiative in Indian Datacenter industry; leads India’s charge in global datacenter outsourcing
· ** If all the existing datacenters in India convert to water-based cooling systems, cost savings on power alone could translate into savings of Rs 1400 crore by 2012
Hyderabad, India (04 June 2009) – CtrlS Datacenters Ltd, announced today that it has partnered with Emerson Network Power India Pvt Ltd to become the first data centre in India to deploy water-based cooling technology. The company is all set to completely replace the air-cooled system at its data center with 15 innovative Liebert PeX cooling systems from Emerson. The new system uses water-based heat transfer technology that converts water into cool air which is then pushed into the data center through the indoor units. The system also ensures that water doesn’t enter inside at any point of time thereby eliminating any risk to IT infrastructure. With the new cooling system, CtrlS expects to save 30 per cent on energy costs annually.
“This innovation has further strengthened CtrlS’ value proposition for global outsourcing of data centre services to India,” said Mr. Sridhar Reddy, Chairman and Managing Director, CtrlS. “CtrlS has always been at the forefront of embracing innovation. This new cooling system is part of our efforts to bring in energy efficiencies and save on costs which can be passed on to our customers. Moreover, this is a completely environment friendly system with zero carbon dioxide emission.,” he further added.
Today’s high speed computing systems and high-density blade servers are using more energy and generating more heat than ever before. Due to a lack of understanding on the cooling requirements of these sensitive electronics, end users have traditionally been reluctant to invest in water-based cooling solution due to their high upfront costs and risk. However, the unique water-based cooling solution from Emerson has been designed to save huge energy costs, without compromising data center protection.
“We are happy to work with CtrlS to deploy this revolutionary cooling solution. Data centers worldwide are pressed to contain costs associated with cooling and other support infrastructure. Our unique water-based cooling solution gives data centers dual advantage of cost efficiency and safety. Additionally, liquid cooling fulfils both the economic and environmental requirements by offering maximum energy efficiency and minimum environmental impact.” says Mr. U Gopi, Country Manager (Data Center Business), Emerson Network Power (India) Pvt Ltd.
In preparation, CtrlS made numerous changes at its data center. The company implemented a state-of-the-art water treatment and chemical plant to ensure quality water supply; computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to detect thermal problems; and variable air volume (VAV) to manage the variable cooling requirements for high density racks. The VAV technique helps remove heat and control air conditioning systems by keeping one part of the exchanger temperature constant. Airflow is regulated according to the demand.
In the CtrlS data center, the water-cooled condenser units are placed outdoors to prevent water from entering the data center. The units are placed near the indoor units for maximum cooling efficiency. Water is pumped from cooling towers and a piping mechanism takes it to the condenser and back. In conjunction with an efficient floor layout and improved raised floor, CtrlS has effectively reduced energy losses with the new cooling system.
