Users have listened to more than 40 millions performances around the globe
Palo Alto, CA. – June 10, 2009 – Smule™, a premier developer of interactive sonic applications for the iPhone, today announced that its Smule Ocarina application has reached one million users worldwide. Combined, these users have listened to over 40 million performances from fellow Ocarina enthusiasts. Ocarina, the first true wind instrument available for the iPhone, is ranked one of the top 20 all-time top applications in the Apple App Store.
“One million users is an incredible milestone and we’re continually excited that people around the world are discovering the magic of Ocarina,” said Dr. Ge Wang, CTO and co-founder of Smule and Assistant Professor of Computer Music at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. “The Ocarina community formed organically, and to know that our users have enjoyed over 40 million performances from fellow users around the world is very moving to us to see. It’s truly something special that we are witnessing and we’re encouraged to see this kind of creativity.”
A virtual instrument, powering worldwide connectivity
Introduced in fall 2008, Ocarina transforms the iPhone and iPod touch into flute-like musical instrument. Both easy to learn and challenging to master, Ocarina is, for many users, the first time they’ve expressed themselves through music. In addition to playing the Ocarina through breath or touch, users can connect with other players around the globe and watch their performances. To date, Ocarina users have listened to over 40 million performances, all of them generated by fellow Ocarina enthusiasts.
An ever growing song library
Beyond playing the Ocarina, and listening to fellow users around the world, users are also very active in a web-based community on Smule.com. Using a simple composition tool, Ocarina enthusiasts can compose and share Ocarina “sheet music” with fellow community members. These compositions are visual representations of the finger placements necessary to create specific notes on the Ocarina, and can therefore be used even by people who can’t read music. More than 1,500 scores have been posted to the forums at ocarina.smule.com, all generated by Ocarina users.
